Police Stations in Thiruvananthapuram
The Commissioner of Police sits at the head of the law and order machinery in the city. He is assisted by two Deputy Commissioners of Police below whom are several Assistant Commissioners of Police. The police department’s jurisdiction includes law and order, traffic, crime investigation, narcotics, intelligence, crime records, foreigners’ registration, women and tourists. A reserve force is always on standby to assist the police in case of any emergency. Thiruvananthapuram Police consists of three subdivisions, ten circles and 21 police stations.A tourist cell was created in 1997 to assist tourists, especially foreigners, visiting the city. It can be approached for information regarding places of interest, details of accommodation, how to get there and for assistance in case of any emergency. Tourist police are stationed at Kovalam Beach, Central Railway Station, International Airport, Veli Tourist Village and Akkulam Tourist Centre.
The senior citizen’s cell is meant for the benefit of those above 60 years, especially if they are staying alone. They have to register at the cell and their homes will be visited every fortnight by a policeman. They can contact the control room in case of any emergency. During night patrolling, their homes will be under surveillance.
The women’s and children’s cell takes cognizance of crimes against the weaker sections of society. Any woman or child in distress can call 1091 for immediate assistance. This includes women and children who are subjected to domestic violence.
A cyber cell has also been set up to check cyber crimes. It takes cognizance of threatening emails, defamatory emails, forgery of electronic records, bogus websites, email spoofing, web jacking, online sale of narcotics, online sale of weapons, hacking, pornography, email bombing, denial of service attacks, virus attacks, salami attacks and logic bombs. All these crimes are covered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The Thiruvananthapuram Police has also launched the Janamaithri Suraksha Programme, a community policing initiative which gives citizens an opportunity to join hands with the police in fighting crime. Beat officers would establish close contacts with people in the neighbourhood who would also participate in night patrolling. Committees of ten members would be formed in all police station limits and would oversee the progress of the programme.
